Dentist Warns Bleeding Gums May Signal More Than Poor Oral Hygiene

Dentist explains why bleeding gums may signal cardiovascular health risks.

Persistent bleeding from the gums may indicate inflammation or periodontal disease and should not be dismissed as merely a cosmetic problem, according to dentist Dr Mark Burhenne. He said growing research has identified an association between poor gum health and cardiovascular conditions, although gum disease has not been established as a direct cause of heart attacks.

Burhenne referred to a patient in her mid-40s who appeared healthy but experienced bleeding gums during a routine cleaning and suffered a heart attack six months later. He stressed that one case does not prove causation. Instead, persistent gum inflammation and cardiovascular disease may share biological pathways and common risk factors that warrant medical and dental attention.

The American Heart Association highlighted an association between periodontal disease and heart disease in 2012 and reviewed newer evidence in 2025. More recent research has explored possible links with additional cardiovascular conditions, including atrial fibrillation and heart failure. However, an association does not establish that treating gum disease will prevent these conditions.

Gum disease causes inflammation and damage in the tissues surrounding the teeth. When gums are affected, oral bacteria may enter the bloodstream, and researchers have detected some oral bacteria within arterial plaque. Chronic inflammation has also been studied as a possible connection because sustained inflammation can contribute to blood-vessel damage and the development or progression of plaque.

Burhenne said healthy gums should not bleed regularly during brushing or flossing and described persistent bleeding as a warning sign that deserves assessment. Bleeding can have several causes, and people experiencing it repeatedly should consult a dentist rather than attempting to diagnose the problem themselves. Early dental evaluation can help identify gingivitis, periodontal disease or another underlying condition.

He recommended consistent brushing, flossing and regular dental examinations to control plaque and detect gum inflammation early. Good oral hygiene can form part of preventive healthcare, but it does not replace established measures for reducing cardiovascular risk, including controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes, maintaining a balanced diet, exercising and avoiding smoking. Anyone concerned about bleeding gums or heart health should seek professional medical or dental advice.
