Coffee Timing Matters: How Your Daily Cup Could Affect Iron Absorption
Coffee may interfere with iron absorption when consumed with meals.
Coffee may affect how much iron the body absorbs when it is consumed with an iron-rich meal or immediately afterwards. According to clinical dietitian Veena V, coffee contains polyphenols, including chlorogenic acids, which can reduce the absorption of non-haem iron. This form of iron is mainly found in plant-based foods such as legumes, vegetables, nuts and fortified products.
However, drinking coffee does not automatically cause iron deficiency or anaemia in healthy people. The concern is greater among those who already have low iron levels, have increased iron requirements or rely heavily on plant-based sources of iron. Coffee can also interfere with the absorption of an iron supplement when consumed at the same time, making the timing of both meals and supplements important.
Iron from food is broadly classified as haem and non-haem iron. Haem iron, found mainly in meat, poultry and fish, is generally absorbed more efficiently by the body. Non-haem iron, found in foods such as beans, lentils, vegetables, nuts and fortified products, is more affected by other components consumed as part of the meal, including compounds present in coffee and tea.

For most people, there is no need to stop drinking coffee because of concerns about iron absorption. Instead, people with iron deficiency or those taking iron supplements should avoid having coffee alongside the supplement or immediately after an iron-rich meal. Separating coffee from an iron source can help minimise the interaction, particularly when maintaining adequate iron levels is already a concern.
The rest of the meal can also influence non-haem iron absorption. Vitamin C-rich foods such as citrus fruits, amla, guava, tomatoes and capsicum can improve the absorption of non-haem iron when eaten alongside plant-based sources. At the same time, calcium and compounds found in tea and coffee can interfere with absorption, making the overall combination and timing of foods important.
If iron deficiency or anaemia has been confirmed, changing coffee timing alone may not address the underlying problem. Low iron can result from inadequate dietary intake, poor absorption, increased requirements or blood loss, while excessive menstrual bleeding can be an important factor in women. The underlying cause should therefore be assessed, with coffee timing considered as one part of managing iron intake and absorption.
