Bottle Gourd Juice Benefits: Best Time, Dosage And Possible Side Effects Explained

Morning lauki juice may improve digestion and hydration, but experts advise moderation and avoiding bitter bottle gourd.

Drinking Lauki juice on an empty stomach has long been promoted in traditional wellness practices, particularly in Ayurveda, for its hydrating and digestive benefits. Made from Lagenaria siceraria, the vegetable contains nearly 96% water and is valued for being light, low in calories, and rich in essential nutrients. Health experts often recommend consuming the juice early in the morning, though its benefits and risks depend on proper preparation and moderate intake.

Nutritionally, bottle gourd juice is considered a low-calorie beverage that supports hydration and digestive health. A 100-gram serving provides around 14 calories, small amounts of protein and carbohydrates, and about 1.2 grams of fibre. It also contains potassium, vitamin C, and traces of calcium, magnesium, and iron. Because it is low in fat and sodium, the drink is widely regarded as a nutrient-dense option that can be incorporated into balanced diets.

Supporters say consuming lauki juice first thing in the morning may aid digestion. The high water and fibre content can stimulate digestive enzymes and support smoother bowel movements, potentially easing issues such as constipation, acidity, and bloating. Some nutritionists also suggest that drinking the juice before breakfast may help control appetite, as its fibre content promotes a feeling of fullness that may reduce overeating during the day.

The juice has also been associated with potential benefits for heart health and skin. Potassium in bottle gourd may help regulate blood pressure by balancing sodium levels and promoting fluid balance in the body. Additionally, its vitamin C and antioxidant content may contribute to improved skin hydration and collagen production, which could support skin elasticity and overall appearance.

However, experts warn that lauki juice should be consumed cautiously and always prepared fresh. Bitter-tasting bottle gourd may contain high levels of cucurbitacins, toxic compounds that can cause severe symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea. Overconsumption can also lead to digestive discomfort or excessive drops in blood pressure in individuals with already low levels.

For safe consumption, adults are generally advised to start with 100–200 ml of freshly prepared juice and avoid exceeding about 250 ml per day. Drinking it in the morning before breakfast is commonly recommended, though having it 20–30 minutes before meals may also be suitable. Children, elderly individuals, and pregnant women are advised to consult healthcare professionals before adding lauki juice regularly to their diet.
