Andhra Pradesh on alert after two COVID-19 deaths in Kadapa.

Health authorities in Andhra Pradesh have intensified surveillance and precautionary measures after a fresh rise in COVID-19 cases in YSR Kadapa district, where eight active infections and two recent deaths have been reported. The state government has placed district administrations on alert and directed officials to strengthen testing, surveillance and infection-control measures to prevent further spread of the virus. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious while assuring that appropriate preventive measures are being implemented.

According to officials, a 52-year-old man from Rajampet in Kadapa district died while undergoing treatment at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, after testing positive for COVID-19 following symptoms of fever and cough. In a separate case, a 43-year-old man from Kadapa who had been admitted to the Government General Hospital with health complications also tested positive for the virus and later died while receiving treatment in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit. A 25-year-old medical student from Kadapa Medical College has also tested positive and is currently recovering in home isolation.

Following the detection of the new cases, the Health Department deployed special rapid response teams to affected areas in Kadapa district. Officials collected samples from around 40 individuals identified through contact tracing and surveillance. Of these, 18 samples have tested negative, while the remaining results are awaited. Authorities have also sent samples to a laboratory in Pune for genome sequencing to determine the circulating variant and better understand its transmission pattern.

District In-Charge Minister Savitha has instructed officials to immediately implement preventive measures across affected areas. During a review with District Collector C.H. Sridhar and District Medical and Health Officer Ravi Babu, she directed authorities to strictly enforce COVID-19 guidelines, increase public awareness campaigns and make mask-wearing compulsory in crowded places, including hospitals and other public spaces. She also ordered active monitoring of individuals displaying symptoms such as fever, cough and breathing difficulties.

The minister further directed officials to intensify sanitation drives, including cleaning and bleaching operations in affected localities. Family members and close contacts of infected individuals are to be tested without delay, with those testing positive shifted to isolation facilities wherever required. Others identified as contacts will be monitored through home isolation under the supervision of local health teams to minimise the risk of further transmission.

Following the developments in Kadapa, the Andhra Pradesh Health Department has issued a statewide COVID-19 preparedness alert, asking all districts to strengthen surveillance, reporting systems and hospital readiness. Medical facilities have been instructed to keep isolation wards, beds and essential medical support available for any potential increase in cases. While urging citizens not to panic, health authorities have advised people to maintain personal hygiene, wear masks in crowded areas and seek prompt medical attention if COVID-19-like symptoms develop.
