Actor Alaya F has drawn attention online after sharing a fitness video in which she attempts a deep oversplit while balancing on two brick columns and lightly holding a wall support bar. Captioning the clip “Death by oversplit,” the actor showcased an advanced flexibility exercise that quickly sparked discussion about its safety and risks.
According to physiotherapist Dr. Shreyas Kathrani of Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, oversplits can offer several fitness benefits when performed correctly. The exercise helps improve flexibility in the hips, thighs, and leg muscles while also engaging the core and back muscles to maintain stability. It can enhance balance, body control, concentration, and overall mobility.
However, experts caution that oversplits are an advanced movement that should only be attempted by individuals with significant flexibility training and proper supervision. The extreme position places considerable stress on the hamstrings, hip flexors, groin muscles, ligaments, and joints, increasing the likelihood of strains, tears, and overuse injuries if performed incorrectly.

The risk becomes even greater when the stretch is performed on elevated surfaces, such as bricks or blocks, as shown in the video. Loss of balance could result in falls, while forcing the body beyond its natural range of motion may lead to long-term joint instability or soft-tissue damage. Experts emphasize that flexibility gains should be gradual rather than forced.
For beginners, physiotherapists recommend starting with standard floor-based stretching exercises and progressing slowly under professional guidance. Elevated oversplits should only be attempted after developing adequate flexibility, strength, and balance. Proper warm-up, controlled movement, and attention to pain signals are essential to reduce the risk of injury.
