Underrated Indian Escapes to Explore On Your Next Last-Minute Weekend Trip

Travel expert recommends six offbeat Indian destinations for weekend getaways.

Long weekends are increasingly encouraging Indian travellers to move beyond familiar destinations such as Goa and Manali and explore quieter, less crowded alternatives. Combining a weekend with a few days of leave can turn into a short micro-vacation, with travellers seeking hill stations, scenic train journeys, coastal experiences and adventure destinations. Travel trends indicate that younger travellers, in particular, are showing greater interest in places that offer distinctive experiences away from the conventional tourist circuit.

One destination gaining attention is Yercaud in Tamil Nadu, a hill station situated in the Shevaroy Hills. Known for its coffee plantations, pleasant climate and forested surroundings, Yercaud offers a slower-paced alternative for travellers looking for a relaxed weekend. Visitors can explore Yercaud Lake, Anna Park and the Botanical Garden, while Pagoda Viewpoint provides an opportunity to enjoy sunrise or sunset views. The drive through forest stretches and winding hairpin bends is also part of the experience.

Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh is another destination attracting growing interest, particularly among travellers looking for a scenic journey. The valley combines green landscapes, hills and a quieter atmosphere with the appeal of travelling by train. Travel data cited by the report showed that train bookings to Araku Valley recorded a twofold increase, suggesting that more travellers are considering the destination for short breaks. The journey itself can become a major part of the trip, making Araku suitable for those who prefer experiences over conventional sightseeing.

The broader trend points to changing preferences among Indian weekend travellers, who are increasingly searching for destinations that provide novelty without necessarily requiring long holidays. Smaller hill stations, relatively quieter towns and destinations connected by scenic routes can offer an alternative to heavily visited tourist centres. Such trips can also be planned around personal interests, whether that means spending time in nature, exploring local landscapes, taking a train journey or simply escaping crowded urban environments.

Travel expert Rathinamurthy R, head of travel at Scapia, said travellers were increasingly looking for destinations beyond the usual tourist circuit. According to him, the best trips are not necessarily those taken by everyone else, with younger Indian travellers showing growing interest in places that provide a sense of discovery. The reported increase in bookings to Araku Valley reflects this broader shift towards more distinctive travel experiences and lesser-known destinations.

For travellers planning a last-minute weekend escape, destinations such as Yercaud and Araku Valley illustrate the range of alternatives available within India. Instead of repeating the same popular itineraries, travellers can consider quieter locations that combine nature, local experiences and manageable travel plans. With a few additional days of leave, these short getaways can become compact holidays while offering a different experience from the country's more familiar tourist destinations.
