Indian Railways Adds 116 Coaches Across 37 Trains to Ease Flight Chaos

Railways floods routes with 116 extra coaches, 4 emergency specials.

Indian Railways has attached 116 additional coaches to 37 premium trains across 114 augmented trips starting December 6, 2025, instantly creating thousands of extra berths and seats on the busiest routes where air passengers are scrambling for alternatives after more than a thousand flights were cancelled in a single day.

Southern Railway has executed the largest augmentation drive by far, bolstering 18 high-demand trains with Sleeper and Chair Car coaches to absorb the sudden influx from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, while Northern Railway has reinforced eight key services with 3AC and Chair Car coaches to ease the crush on routes feeding into the national capital region. Western Railway has swiftly added 2AC and 3AC coaches to four premium trains connecting Mumbai with Delhi and Gujarat, ensuring business travellers and families are not left helpless.

East Central Railway has upgraded the prestigious Rajendra Nagar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express (12309) with extra 2AC coaches for five consecutive trips between December 6-10, while East Coast Railway has attached additional 2AC coaches to three Bhubaneswar-New Delhi services (02817/02811/02823) to accommodate surging demand from Odisha. Eastern Railway has inserted Sleeper coaches into three trains over six trips on December 7-8, and Northeast Frontier Railway has permanently augmented two vital trains with 3AC and Sleeper coaches for eight trips each until December 13, guaranteeing connectivity for the far northeast.

Beyond regular augmentations, Railways has pressed four fully reserved special trains into service, including the Gorakhpur-Anand Vihar Terminal Special (05591/05592) operating four round trips between December 7-9, the high-speed New Delhi-Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Vande Bharat Special (02439/02440) on December 6 for urgent Jammu travel, the New Delhi-Mumbai Central Reserved Superfast Special (04002/04001) on December 6-7, and the long-distance Hazrat Nizamuddin-Thiruvananthapuram Central Reserved Superfast Special (04080) running one-way on December 6 to clear the southern backlog.

With these decisive measures, Indian Railways has once again demonstrated its unmatched ability to step up during national emergencies, offering reliable, affordable and immediate relief to lakhs of passengers abandoned by the aviation sector’s collapse.
