Snickers Was Named After A Horse: The Surprising Story Behind The Chocolate Bar

A beloved racehorse inspired the name of the iconic chocolate bar.

The name Snickers, one of the world's best-known chocolate bars, has an unusual connection to a racehorse owned by the Mars family. The popular combination of chocolate, caramel, nougat and peanuts was first introduced in 1930, but the name was not chosen randomly. According to Mars, the company behind the brand, the original Snickers bar was named after a family horse that died shortly before the product was launched.

Frank C. and Ethel V. Mars had built their business after the success of the Mar-o-Bar company, which produced the Milky Way chocolate bar. The couple later invested in a 3,000-acre horse breeding farm that became known for producing Thoroughbred racing champions. One of the successful horses associated with the family was named Snickers, and the animal's death shortly before the launch gave the couple a reason to honour it through their new confectionery product.

The first Snickers bar was manufactured in Chicago and was initially sold for five cents. The chocolate-covered bar featured a combination of caramel, peanuts and nougat that helped it gain popularity among consumers. As demand grew, the Mars family looked at expanding the product beyond the United States and eventually introduced it to international markets, including the United Kingdom.

The British launch, however, came with an unexpected naming issue. According to reports, company executives were concerned that the name Snickers sounded similar to "knickers", a British term for underwear. Because of the potential for controversy, the chocolate bar was sold in the UK under the name Marathon Bar for several years. The original Snickers name was eventually restored, bringing the product's branding into line with its international identity.

Over the decades, the brand expanded its range with different products and formats. Fun Size Snickers was introduced in 1968, while the Snickers Ice Cream Bar arrived in 1989, adapting the familiar flavours into a frozen dessert. Other variations have included Snickers Almond, Peanut Butter, Pecan, Milk Chocolate and White Chocolate, along with limited-edition products associated with occasions such as Halloween and Easter.

Snickers received another major boost in global popularity through its "You're not you when you're hungry" advertising campaign, which featured Betty White in a Super Bowl commercial in 2010. The campaign later included several well-known celebrities and athletes, helping establish the brand's hunger-themed advertising identity. From a chocolate bar named in memory of a racehorse to a globally recognised confectionery brand, Snickers has built a history that extends well beyond its familiar wrapper.
