No More Wasted Coriander: A Simple Hack To Keep It Fresh Longer

Simple storage method helps coriander stay fresh longer.

Coriander is a common kitchen ingredient used to add freshness and flavour to dishes such as dals, curries, chaats, chutneys, and sandwiches. However, the herb is also known for losing its freshness quickly, often becoming limp, dry, or slimy within a few days of purchase. To find the most effective way to extend its shelf life, five popular storage methods were tested to determine which technique keeps coriander fresh for the longest period.

The first method involved storing coriander in the same plastic bag in which it was purchased and placing it directly in the refrigerator. This method showed poor results, as the leaves began turning limp within three days. By the fifth day, moisture had collected inside the bag, causing some leaves to become slimy. The trapped humidity inside plastic was found to speed up spoilage.

The second method involved wrapping coriander in a paper towel before placing it inside a zip-lock bag. After gently drying the herb, it was stored in the refrigerator using this technique. The coriander remained fresh and crisp for nearly a week, with significantly less moisture buildup. However, the paper towel needed to be replaced if it became damp to prevent the leaves from spoiling.

Another tested method was storing coriander like a bouquet by placing the trimmed stems in a glass jar filled with a small amount of water and loosely covering the leaves. This technique helped maintain the herb’s freshness for more than a week, keeping the stems hydrated and leaves vibrant. The only drawback was that the water required changing every few days and the jar occupied additional refrigerator space.

Washing coriander before storage was also tested, but the results were less effective. Although the herb was washed and dried carefully before being placed in a container, some moisture remained between the leaves, causing it to spoil faster. The final method, storing coriander in an airtight container lined with a dry paper towel, produced the best results, keeping the leaves green, crisp, and fresh for nearly 10 days.

The experiment concluded that controlling moisture is the key factor in preserving coriander. While excess moisture encourages spoilage, the right balance helps maintain freshness. Among all tested techniques, an airtight container with a paper towel lining proved to be the most practical and effective method, while storing coriander in water also worked well for frequent users who can maintain the jar regularly.
