Eating Rice At Night Doesn’t Decide Your Weight Loss Journey, Experts Say
Experts explain rice’s role in night meals and weight management.
Rice is often considered one of the first foods to avoid when people begin a weight-loss journey, especially during dinner. However, nutrition experts say that eating rice at night does not automatically lead to weight gain. Instead, factors such as total calorie intake, portion size and overall diet pattern play a much bigger role in determining weight management.
According to nutritionist Rupali Datta, the timing of eating rice is not the main factor behind weight gain. She explains that weight loss depends on the balance between calories consumed and calories burned. If a person maintains an appropriate calorie intake, including rice in an evening meal will not by itself prevent weight loss. The belief that rice eaten at night directly causes fat gain is largely considered a misconception.
Experts emphasise that portion control is more important than completely removing rice from the diet. Datta suggests keeping portions moderate, with around half to one cup of cooked rice per meal, and combining it with protein sources such as dal, paneer or chicken along with vegetables. A balanced meal can help improve satiety and provide better nutritional value compared with eating a large quantity of rice alone.

Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar also disagrees with the idea that rice must be eliminated for weight loss. She recommends choosing traditional varieties such as single-polished or hand-pounded rice and maintaining a reasonable gap between dinner and bedtime. According to her, rice can be part of a healthy eating pattern when consumed mindfully, and there is no single “perfect” rice variety suitable for everyone.
The common debate between rice and roti at dinner also does not have a universal answer. Nutritionist Kavita Devgan says both foods can fit into a healthy meal plan, depending on individual preferences, digestion and the overall composition of the meal. Rather than focusing on completely replacing one with the other, she recommends paying attention to portion sizes and maintaining a balanced plate.
For people trying to lose weight, experts suggest that avoiding rice at night may not be necessary. The focus should remain on overall eating habits, controlled portions and combining carbohydrates with protein and vegetables. A well-planned dinner that includes rice can still support weight-loss goals when it fits within a balanced diet.
