'Don't Cast Me': Taapsee Pannu Advises Filmmakers Against Predictable Roles

Taapsee Pannu has said she deliberately turned down several acting opportunities to avoid being typecast in the Hindi film industry. The actor, who has built a career around a mix of women-led dramas, thrillers and socially relevant films, said she has sometimes advised filmmakers not to cast her when she felt her involvement could make a project predictable. Taapsee has appeared in films such as Pink, Mulk and Thappad, among others, and has frequently taken on roles that place female characters at the centre of the story. Her film choices have helped establish her as an actor willing to explore different genres and characters rather than remain confined to one particular screen image.

In a recent interview with news agency PTI, Taapsee discussed the challenges of maintaining variety in an industry where actors can quickly become associated with a particular type of character. She said she has consciously avoided repeating roles simply because they fit an image audiences or filmmakers have developed around her. The actor revealed that she has even been direct with directors when she believed a proposed role was too similar to something she had already done. According to Taapsee, she has told filmmakers, “Don’t cast me in this, it’s bad for your film,” when she felt her casting could work against the project by making the character appear repetitive.

Her approach reflects a broader concern among actors about typecasting, particularly after a successful performance establishes a recognisable persona. While being associated with a particular genre can create opportunities, Taapsee believes repeatedly accepting similar roles could eventually restrict an actor's range and affect the way audiences perceive their performances. Taapsee's career has included a wide range of characters and subjects. In Pink, she played a woman involved in a legal battle over consent and victim-blaming. Mulk dealt with questions of prejudice and communal tensions, while Thappad centred on a woman's decision to challenge domestic abuse and expectations within a marriage.

The actor has also experimented with action-oriented projects, demonstrating an interest in physically demanding roles alongside more issue-driven dramas. Her latest project, Gandhari, continues that trajectory, presenting her in an action thriller built around a mother's struggle to save her daughter. Gandhari is scheduled to release on Netflix. The film adds another dimension to Taapsee's recent body of work, particularly as she takes on a character driven by a personal mission and high-stakes action. The project is expected to showcase a different side of the actor compared with some of her earlier socially focused performances.

Taapsee's comments also underline the importance of choosing roles based on the overall strength of a project rather than simply the prominence of the character. For an established actor, accepting a role that resembles previous work may offer immediate visibility but can make it harder to demonstrate versatility over the longer term. She has previously spoken about the difficulties actors face when attempting to move between genres and character types. Once an actor becomes identified with a certain style, filmmakers may repeatedly approach them with similar scripts because they believe audiences will respond to that established image.

For Taapsee, avoiding that cycle appears to be a conscious career strategy. Rather than accepting every opportunity, she has chosen to reject projects when she feels they do not offer something sufficiently different. Her willingness to question casting decisions also reflects the importance she places on the larger film rather than simply her own presence in it. The strategy has allowed her to move between mainstream entertainment and films dealing with more serious social themes. It has also enabled her to build an identity that is not dependent on a single genre or character archetype.

With Gandhari, Taapsee is now set to explore another action-heavy role while remaining at the centre of a female-led narrative. The Netflix release will add to a filmography in which she has repeatedly attempted to avoid predictable choices. As Taapsee continues to assess new projects, her comments suggest that maintaining variety remains an important consideration. Her decision to turn down roles that could reinforce an existing image reflects a deliberate attempt to prevent typecasting and keep her career open to different characters, genres and storytelling styles.
