Doctor Dismantles Five Sleep Apnea Myths Preventing Millions From Treatment

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep-related breathing disorder that often goes undiagnosed because many people mistake its symptoms for ordinary tiredness or harmless snoring. Medical experts warn that untreated sleep apnea can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other long-term health complications. To raise awareness, pulmonary specialist Dr. Gopal Chawla recently addressed several common misconceptions surrounding the condition and explained why early diagnosis is crucial.

One of the most widespread myths is that snoring is harmless. According to Dr. Chawla, loud and persistent snoring can be a major warning sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which the airway repeatedly becomes blocked during sleep. While not every person who snores has sleep apnea, regular loud snoring accompanied by fatigue or breathing interruptions should not be ignored.

Another common misconception is that only obese individuals develop sleep apnea. Although excess weight is a significant risk factor, the condition can also affect people with a healthy body weight. Factors such as genetics, facial structure, a naturally narrow airway or enlarged tonsils can contribute to the disorder regardless of a person's size or fitness level.

Dr. Chawla also emphasised that sleep apnea is not merely a sleep problem. Repeated drops in oxygen levels place stress on multiple organs and body systems. Research has linked untreated sleep apnea to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension and Type 2 diabetes. The condition can therefore have serious consequences beyond poor sleep quality and daytime tiredness.

Another myth is that daytime sleepiness is normal, especially among busy professionals. Experts say excessive fatigue, morning headaches, poor concentration and persistent drowsiness may indicate fragmented sleep caused by breathing interruptions during the night. Such symptoms can affect productivity, mental health and overall quality of life if left untreated.

Doctors stress that sleep apnea should not be ignored because effective treatments are available. Options include Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy, weight management, sleeping-position adjustments and specialised throat exercises. Individuals who experience loud snoring, observed pauses in breathing, gasping during sleep, morning headaches or unexplained daytime fatigue are advised to seek medical evaluation. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve sleep quality and reduce the risk of serious health complications in the future.
