Security Guard Arrested After Firing Taser at Patron's Face at California Bar

California security guard arrested on assault charges following taser incident.

A security guard has been arrested after allegedly firing a taser at a customer's face at close range outside a rooftop bar in Carlsbad, California, an incident that was captured on video and widely shared on social media. According to police, the confrontation took place on Wednesday night outside Park 101, where a witness recorded the incident. The footage quickly went viral, prompting public attention and a police investigation into the use of force by the security guard.

The video appears to show a shirtless man standing near the entrance of the venue when the security guard suddenly fires a stun gun from point-blank range, striking him in the face. A separate clip circulating online later shows the same security guard being escorted away in handcuffs by police officers. The available videos do not include the events that led up to the confrontation, leaving the circumstances surrounding the incident unclear.

According to reports citing police, the security guard has been identified as David Marquez. Officers reviewed the viral footage before taking him into custody. He was subsequently booked into Vista County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and assault with a stun gun. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the alleged victim's condition or whether anyone else was injured during the incident.

The incident has generated widespread discussion on social media, with many users criticising the apparent use of force shown in the video. Several commenters argued that a security guard does not have the authority to use excessive force against patrons and suggested the business and security company could face legal action. Others questioned whether the guard's professional licence could be affected if the allegations are proven.

At the same time, some users urged caution, noting that the circulating footage begins after the confrontation had already started and does not show what occurred beforehand. They argued that a complete investigation would be necessary to determine whether the security guard's actions were justified under the circumstances. Police have not publicly disclosed what prompted the altercation or whether additional evidence is being reviewed.

In California, private security guards are required to obtain licences and complete training through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services before performing security duties. Authorities have not announced the results of their investigation, and no official findings regarding the use of force have been released. The case remains under investigation as police continue to gather evidence and determine the full sequence of events surrounding the incident.
