Microsoft Adds $450 Billion In A Day, Overtakes Nvidia. What's Behind The Surge?

AI optimism fuels Microsoft's record market value surge.

Microsoft recorded the largest single-day increase in market value ever achieved by a publicly listed company after adding nearly $450 billion (approximately Rs 39 lakh crore) to its market capitalisation in one trading session. The surge followed the company's stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings, which boosted investor confidence in its artificial intelligence strategy. The rally also enabled Microsoft to overtake Nvidia and regain its position as the world's most valuable publicly traded company.

Microsoft's shares climbed around 9 per cent after the earnings announcement, reflecting optimism over the company's financial performance and future growth prospects. The increase in market value surpassed the total stock market capitalisation of several countries, underscoring the scale of the rally. Investors responded positively to the company's results, which indicated that its substantial investments in AI infrastructure are beginning to deliver tangible business benefits.

A key driver of the strong performance was Azure, Microsoft's cloud computing platform, which posted better-than-expected growth during the quarter. Demand for AI-powered cloud services remained robust as businesses continued investing in artificial intelligence technologies. The company also issued an optimistic revenue outlook for the current quarter, signalling sustained momentum in cloud computing and AI-related services.

Over the past year, Microsoft has invested tens of billions of dollars in data centres, advanced chips and AI infrastructure, prompting concerns among investors about rising costs and pressure on profitability. However, the latest earnings helped ease those concerns by demonstrating that the company's AI investments are translating into higher revenue growth rather than merely increasing expenditure. The results reinforced confidence that Microsoft's long-term AI strategy is beginning to generate meaningful financial returns.

Microsoft's performance has also strengthened investor sentiment across the broader technology sector, particularly among companies with significant exposure to artificial intelligence. The earnings have fuelled expectations that firms such as Nvidia, Amazon and Alphabet could also benefit from continued demand for AI technologies and cloud services. The record-breaking rally highlights growing confidence that AI investments are becoming a major driver of growth for leading global technology companies.
