Harish Parvathaneni Counters Pakistan at UNSC Over Operation Sindoor Claims

India's UN envoy rejects Pakistan's account of Operation Sindoor, calling Islamabad's agenda anti-India.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Harish Parvathaneni, strongly rebuked Pakistan at the UN on Monday over what he called Islamabad’s “false and self-serving account” of Operation Sindoor. Speaking at the UN Security Council’s open debate on Reaffirming International Rule of Law: Pathways to Reinvigorating Peace, Justice, and Multilateralism, Parvathaneni accused Pakistan of having a “single-point agenda to harm India and its citizens” and asserted that the country has no standing to comment on India’s internal matters.

The remarks came in response to Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, who referenced Operation Sindoor, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Indus Waters Treaty in his address. Operation Sindoor, carried out on May 7, 2025, was India’s retaliatory action following a terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people. The Indian operation targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, reportedly eliminating over 100 terrorists.

Parvathaneni highlighted that while Pakistan threatened further attacks on India until May 9, 2025, “the Pakistani military called our military directly on May 10 and pleaded for cessation to the fighting.” He emphasized that the damage caused to multiple Pakistani air bases, including destroyed runways and burnt hangars, is well-documented and publicly visible. He also stressed that the UN should not be used as a forum for Pakistan to legitimize terrorism, asserting that continued tolerance of state-sponsored terror is unacceptable.

On Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian envoy reaffirmed that the region is an “integral and inalienable part of India,” rejecting Pakistan’s claims and interference. He further addressed the Indus Waters Treaty, noting that India entered the 65-year-old agreement in good faith but that Pakistan has repeatedly violated its spirit through wars and terror attacks. Parvathaneni explained that India has held the treaty in abeyance until Pakistan ends its support for terrorism.

Addressing Pakistan directly, Parvathaneni advised Islamabad to introspect on its rule of law, pointing to the 27th Constitutional Amendment passed under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in November last year, which grants Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir lifetime immunity from legal prosecution.

In conclusion, India’s UN envoy reiterated that Pakistan’s repeated use of terrorism as a state instrument cannot be normalized, calling on the international community to recognize the threat posed by Islamabad and its ongoing attempts to undermine peace and security in the region.
