Tamil Nadu Government Releases White Paper Showing Rs 13.18 Lakh Crore Liabilities
Tamil Nadu white paper reveals heavy debt, sparks debate.
The newly elected TVK government led by C. Joseph Vijay has released a white paper on Tamil Nadu’s fiscal condition, revealing what it describes as a sharply deteriorating financial situation. The document, issued by Finance Minister Marie Wilson, estimates the state’s total financial liabilities at approximately Rs 13.18 lakh crore, drawing widespread political reactions across party lines.
According to the white paper tabled on Tuesday, Tamil Nadu’s outstanding debt burden stands at nearly Rs 10 lakh crore, while the total liabilities, including additional obligations, rise significantly higher. The report has placed the state’s fiscal health under renewed scrutiny, with questions emerging over long-term financial management and the sustainability of public expenditure.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) welcomed the release of the white paper, stating that it highlights the scale of fiscal stress inherited from previous administrations. However, BJP leaders also questioned the new government’s roadmap for addressing the crisis. Leader Tamilisai Soundararajan asked how the administration plans to fund welfare commitments, including cash assistance schemes for women and farmers, which together require tens of thousands of crores in annual expenditure.

Another BJP leader, Narayanan Thirupathy, argued that the state’s debt situation was already well known and publicly documented even before the change in government. He questioned the purpose of issuing the white paper, suggesting that the figures largely reflect previously available data and do not significantly alter the known fiscal picture of the state.
The opposition DMK strongly criticised the white paper, calling it politically motivated. Former Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu stated that the financial position of Tamil Nadu had already been clearly explained in earlier budgets and accused the new government of misrepresenting facts. DMK spokesperson T. K. S. Elangovan also alleged inaccuracies in the report and said the party would soon release detailed counter-data to challenge its findings.
As the debate intensifies, the white paper has triggered a broader political confrontation over fiscal responsibility, governance legacy, and economic planning. While the ruling TVK government has positioned the document as a transparency measure, opposition parties have framed it as either a misrepresentation or a politically driven exercise, setting the stage for an ongoing dispute over Tamil Nadu’s financial trajectory.
