Multiplying Yields: How a Punjab Farmer Multiplied His Acreage and Income

A farmer from Punjab's Muktsar Sahib district has transformed his agricultural journey by shifting from conventional wheat and paddy cultivation to diversified horticulture, significantly expanding both his farmland and income. Balwinder Sandhu, 51, began the transition with just two acres in 2010-11 and today manages a 26-acre farm, of which around 20 acres are dedicated to organic cultivation under the name Preet Agro Nature Way Farm.

Sandhu left his convent education after completing matriculation because of financial constraints and initially worked on his family's traditional farmland. Seeking better returns, he gradually moved towards horticulture by cultivating fruits and vegetables instead of conventional crops. Encouraged by strong customer demand for fresh produce, he steadily increased the area under horticulture over the years.

Today, the farm grows nearly 35 to 40 varieties of fruits and an equally diverse range of seasonal vegetables, along with several spices. The diversified cultivation model has helped reduce dependence on a limited number of crops while creating multiple income streams throughout the year. Sandhu credits his success to understanding market demand and consistently expanding production based on consumer response.

One of the farm's unique attractions is its customer-focused approach. Visitors are encouraged to walk through the fields and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables directly from the plants before purchasing them. This farm-to-consumer model has helped build trust among customers while offering them access to fresh, organically grown produce.

Beyond improving his own livelihood, Sandhu's success has become an example of how crop diversification and horticulture can improve farm profitability. His journey reflects the growing interest among farmers in moving beyond traditional cereal cultivation to high-value crops that offer better returns while catering to changing consumer preferences for fresh and organic food.

The transformation of Sandhu's farm demonstrates the potential of adopting sustainable and market-oriented agricultural practices. His gradual expansion from two acres of horticulture to a thriving 26-acre enterprise highlights how long-term planning, diversification and direct engagement with consumers can create a resilient and profitable farming model.
