IUML Ends Nearly Six-Decade Alliance With DMK Citing Changed Political Circumstances

IUML ends six-decade alliance with DMK over changes.

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has formally ended its nearly six-decade-long political association with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance in Tamil Nadu, marking a significant shift in the state’s coalition landscape, according to party sources. The decision was taken at the IUML’s State General Council meeting, where members passed a resolution to sever ties with the DMK. The party also stated that it would decide its future political alliances ahead of the upcoming local body elections, indicating that its next move will depend on evolving electoral calculations in the state.

The IUML has been part of the DMK alliance since 1967 and has long been considered one of the party’s most consistent minority allies in Tamil Nadu politics. Over the decades, the partnership has remained largely stable, with brief deviations when the IUML contested elections under alternative alliances, including during the 1996 and 2001 Assembly polls when it aligned with the AIADMK-led front.

According to party discussions, changing political circumstances in the state are believed to have influenced the decision. The rise of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, is said to have altered traditional voting patterns and alliance equations, prompting smaller parties to reassess their positioning.

Reports suggest that shifting voter preferences, particularly among minority communities that have historically supported the DMK, have added further complexity to the state’s political dynamics. Party leaders believe that the emergence of new political forces has created a more fragmented electoral environment, making long-standing alliances less predictable. While the IUML has not announced its next alliance, leaders indicated that a formal decision will be made closer to the local body elections.

The party emphasised that its primary focus remains safeguarding its political relevance and ensuring representation in Tamil Nadu’s evolving electoral landscape. The DMK has not yet issued an official response to the IUML’s announcement. However, the development is being viewed as a notable realignment in Tamil Nadu politics, given the IUML’s long-standing association with the ruling coalition and its historical role in minority representation within the state’s political framework.
