GST GSTR-3B Deadline May Be Extended To April 21 Amid Portal Slowdown
GST Network considers one-day GSTR-3B filing extension amid portal glitches and taxpayer complaints.
The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) is considering a possible one-day extension for the filing deadline of GSTR-3B returns for March 2026, after several chartered accountants and taxpayers reported technical glitches on the GST portal. The current deadline for filing remains April 20, 2026, although discussions on extending it to April 21 are underway.
According to an update on the GSTN portal, the government is reviewing feedback and may extend the filing date by one day. However, there has been no official confirmation from the government yet, meaning the original due date continues to remain in force. Tax authorities have also clarified that taxpayers who miss the deadline are still allowed to file returns, but they will be liable to pay interest and penalties.
The GSTR-3B is a monthly summary return used by registered taxpayers to declare their Goods and Services Tax liabilities and discharge payments. It is a mandatory filing for all normal taxpayers under the GST regime. Any delay in submission can lead to financial consequences, including interest at 18 per cent per annum on outstanding tax after adjusting input tax credit.

Tax professionals have raised concerns over repeated portal issues, stating that the GST system has been slow and unresponsive during peak filing hours. Chartered accountants have urged authorities to announce extensions in advance rather than at the last minute, arguing that delayed decisions create operational pressure and stress for businesses and professionals handling large volumes of filings.
Experts have also warned that late filing of GSTR-3B can disrupt business operations beyond penalties. It can affect input tax credit claims for buyers, disrupt vendor relationships, and potentially impact a company’s compliance rating within the GST system. Even short delays, they note, can result in avoidable financial costs. As discussions on extension continue, taxpayers are advised to complete filings as early as possible to avoid interest charges and system-related last-minute complications. The final decision from the government on extending the deadline is still awaited.
