Bengaluru Woman's Rs 43,000 Monthly Budget Goes Viral — And The Internet Has Questions
A 22-year-old's Bengaluru expense post sparks viral cost-of-living debate.
A 22-year-old corporate professional's social media post detailing her monthly living expenses in Bengaluru has sparked widespread discussion online about the city's rising cost of living. The post, shared by Instagram user Sanika Kulkarni, outlined how she spends approximately Rs 43,000 every month while living and working in the Karnataka capital. The detailed expense breakdown quickly gained attention, with many users expressing surprise at how she managed to keep certain costs relatively low.
According to Kulkarni, the largest portion of her monthly expenditure goes toward housing. She lives in a shared two-bedroom apartment in a desirable area of Bengaluru and pays Rs 19,000 as her share of the rent, indicating that the total rent for the flat is around Rs 38,000. One aspect of her budget that drew immediate attention was her electricity expense, which she listed as zero, attributing the savings to a government-supported electricity scheme.
Kulkarni also revealed that she and her sister spend about Rs 7,000 each month on groceries and domestic help. To keep expenses under control, she said they cook meals at home on days when the maid is unavailable. Her approach to balancing convenience and cost resonated with some users, while others questioned whether such expenses accurately reflected the experience of most residents in the city.

Transportation emerged as another major monthly expense. Kulkarni estimated that she spends around Rs 7,000 on daily travel, primarily using autorickshaws. She noted that commuting costs have increased due to rising fuel prices, making transportation a significant component of her monthly budget. Despite the expense, she continues to rely on autos for regular travel across the city.
The corporate employee also allocates a portion of her budget to lifestyle spending. She said she spends nearly Rs 5,000 each month on dining out, explaining that Bengaluru's vibrant cafe culture makes it difficult to resist eating at popular spots across the city. In addition, she budgets around Rs 5,000 for shopping and travel, particularly when visiting her hometown.
As the post went viral, social media users reacted with a mix of curiosity and disbelief. Several commenters questioned how her rent, grocery, transportation and travel expenses remained comparatively low when many Bengaluru residents face significantly higher monthly costs. Others joked that she had discovered a “cheat code” for affordable living in the city, highlighting the ongoing debate around Bengaluru's cost of living and personal budgeting strategies.
