Autorickshaw Driver Reveals He Earns More Than His Old Gurugram Job

Man quits Rs 25,000 job, now earns Rs 60,000 driving autorickshaw.

An autorickshaw driver in Gurugram has become the subject of widespread discussion on social media after revealing that he left a salaried job paying Rs 25,000 a month to pursue full-time driving, a move he claims now earns him between Rs 50,000 and Rs 60,000 every month. The driver's story gained attention through a viral Instagram video posted by a passenger named Akash, who documented an unexpected conversation during his journey home from work. The video has been widely shared as an example of the earning potential available in India's growing gig economy.

According to Akash, he usually travelled by cab after work but chose to take an autorickshaw on the day he met the driver. During their conversation, he asked the driver about his monthly earnings and was surprised by the response. The driver explained that after meeting operational expenses, he is able to save between Rs 40,000 and Rs 45,000 each month, making the occupation financially more rewarding than his previous role as a supervisor at a company in Gurugram.

The driver said he typically earns between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,000 per day by driving for around eight hours. He also shared that despite not receiving a formal education himself, he has been able to fund the education of his three children entirely through his income from driving an autorickshaw. His story resonated with many social media users, who praised his determination to provide better opportunities for the next generation despite the challenges he has faced.

Sharing the video online, Akash described the encounter as one of the most meaningful conversations he had experienced during his daily commute. He wrote that the driver's journey reflected the opportunities emerging within India's expanding gig economy and highlighted how flexible work models are enabling many individuals to improve their financial circumstances. Referring to the driver's experience, he said such stories deserve greater recognition because they showcase the positive impact of self-employment and independent work.

The clip has attracted significant engagement across social media platforms, with many users applauding the driver's work ethic and financial discipline. Others pointed out that the experience demonstrates how income from self-employment can, in certain situations, exceed that of conventional salaried positions. Some users also noted that while gig work offers higher earning potential for some, it often lacks the job security, health benefits and retirement provisions associated with formal employment.

The driver's experience has contributed to the broader conversation surrounding India's evolving labour market, where digital platforms and independent work opportunities are reshaping traditional employment choices. Although earnings in the gig economy can vary widely depending on location, demand and working hours, the viral story has highlighted how entrepreneurship and self-employment can provide viable alternatives for individuals seeking higher incomes while creating better educational opportunities for their families.
