Indian Man Uses UPI In Nepal; Video Highlights Smooth Transaction

Indian tests UPI in Nepal; video shows seamless payment experience.

A video of an Indian traveller using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to make a purchase in Nepal has gone viral online, with the user describing the experience as “surprisingly smooth” and highlighting the ease of cross‑border digital payments in the Himalayan nation.

In the clip shared on social media, the traveller scanned a local merchant’s QR code using a UPI‑enabled app while shopping in a Nepalese store. After entering the amount in Nepalese Rupees (NPR), the app instantly converted the sum into Indian Rupees (INR) and completed the transaction without any additional charges, showcasing the practical benefits of cross‑border UPI acceptance for shoppers visiting from India.

This seamless experience owes to a 2024 integration between India’s UPI system and Nepal’s domestic payment network, primarily through a partnership between NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) and Nepal’s Fonepay Payment Service Ltd. Under this framework, UPI QR‑based payments now function in Nepal for person‑to‑merchant transactions, allowing Indian visitors to use UPI apps such as Google Pay and PhonePe to pay at participating outlets.

The success of this cross‑border system has been reflected in growing transaction volumes: since launch, hundreds of thousands of merchant UPI payments have been processed, with Nepal accounting for a significant portion of international UPI usage outside India.

Indian tourists and shoppers have welcomed the convenience, noting that digital payments eliminate the need to carry or exchange large amounts of cash while abroad. Users regularly report that scanning a QR code and completing a UPI payment offers a cashless alternative that is simpler and often more cost‑effective than traditional foreign exchange or card networks.

Despite the positive reception, acceptance is currently tied to merchants enrolled in the Fonepay QR network; not all shops in Nepal accept UPI yet, especially in rural areas. But as more businesses adopt interoperable digital payment systems, analysts expect UPI usage among tourists and locals alike to continue expanding.

The viral video has sparked renewed interest in global UPI adoption, illustrating how India’s home‑grown real‑time payments platform is increasingly facilitating cross‑border commerce and tourism in neighbouring countries.
