Fuel Price Update: Petrol and Diesel Rates Hold Firm Across Major Cities on August 7
Fuel prices remain steady across major cities.
Brent crude oil prices continued their upward trajectory on Friday, August 7, edging closer to the psychologically important $85-a-barrel level and extending gains from the previous session. At the latest available check, Brent crude futures were trading 0.16 percent higher at $83.67 per barrel. This followed a sharp rally a day earlier in which Brent settled 3.8 percent higher at $82.49 per barrel, while the U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude rose 2.8 percent to close at $77.29 per barrel. The sustained strength in global oil markets has renewed attention on potential supply risks and their cascading effects on energy-importing nations.
The latest price rise was triggered by reports from Iranian state media of a draft proposal that would introduce stricter conditions for the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The strait, a narrow waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, serves as one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints. A substantial share of global seaborne oil trade passes through this route, making any threat of disruption a significant concern for oil markets. Traders responded quickly to the news, pushing prices higher on fears that tighter controls or heightened tensions could constrain tanker traffic and reduce the availability of crude supplies to international buyers.
For India, the implications of elevated crude prices are particularly pronounced. The country imports more than 85 percent of its crude oil requirement, leaving its energy costs highly sensitive to movements in global benchmarks. Sustained strength in Brent and WTI prices is expected to inflate the nation’s oil import bill, placing additional strain on the current account deficit and contributing to broader inflationary pressures within the domestic economy. Higher input costs for refiners can also feed through to retail fuel prices, affecting transportation, logistics, and a wide range of consumer goods that rely on diesel and petrol for distribution.

Domestic fuel prices in India have already undergone multiple revisions in recent months as international crude costs fluctuated. Continued firmness in global markets raises the probability of further upward adjustments to petrol and diesel rates across major cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata. While specific daily retail prices vary by state due to differences in local taxes and dealer commissions, the underlying pressure from higher international crude costs remains a common factor. Consumers and businesses are therefore watching developments closely, as any additional increases would raise the cost of commuting, freight, and industrial operations.
Market participants continue to monitor the situation around the Strait of Hormuz for clarity on whether the draft proposal will be implemented, modified, or set aside. Any formalization of stricter shipping conditions could keep oil prices elevated in the near term and intensify concerns over supply security. Conversely, diplomatic progress or signs of de-escalation might help ease some of the recent upward pressure. In the interim, the combination of geopolitical uncertainty and India’s heavy reliance on imported crude underscores the vulnerability of domestic energy costs to external shocks, leaving open the possibility of further revisions to fuel prices in the weeks ahead if the current trend in international markets persists.
