Oil Price Surge After Saudi Hit Could Hurt Every Indian Wallet

Saudi refinery halt and Hormuz Strait disruptions push crude prices higher, threatening fuel costs in India.

Oil markets surged on Monday as Saudi Aramco was forced to halt operations at its Ras Tanura facility, one of the Middle East’s largest refineries and a key export hub. The shutdown followed missile and drone debris impacts, sparking fears of supply disruptions. The move came amid heightened regional tensions caused by US and Israel strikes on Iran, which also caused tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz to slow dramatically.

Ras Tanura processes around 550,000 barrels per day, and any disruption tightens global crude supply immediately. With tanker operators avoiding the Strait of Hormuz, roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil trade faced delays. Analysts warn that even precautionary shutdowns at such critical points can ripple through energy markets. The twin shocks of halted refinery output and limited maritime transit triggered an immediate spike in crude prices worldwide.

Brent crude surged 9–13% in a single session, reaching highs in the $78–$80 per barrel range, while West Texas Intermediate climbed over 9%, touching the low $70s. Indian markets felt the tremors instantly, with oil-dependent sectors and stock exchanges monitoring volatility closely. Financial experts note that elevated crude prices are likely to increase import bills, exerting inflationary pressure across India.

The development has serious implications for Indian consumers, who could see higher petrol and diesel prices in the coming weeks. Economists caution that the extent of impact will depend on how long global crude oil remains elevated. With uncertainty around regional stability, India’s energy importers are preparing for possible supply adjustments. The situation highlights the vulnerability of domestic markets to geopolitical disruptions thousands of kilometres away.
