"Death Warrant for Farmers": Rahul Gandhi Launches Scathing Attack on India-US Trade Deal
Rahul Gandhi alleges the proposed India-US trade deal threatens farmers and the agricultural sector.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the proposed India–US interim trade agreement, alleging that the deal would “destroy Indian farmers". Speaking at a Kisan Mahachaupal rally in Barnala, Rahul Gandhi claimed that the agreement posed a serious threat to the livelihoods of millions dependent on agriculture.
Rahul Gandhi alleged that the trade deal had remained stalled for four months due to disagreements over opening India’s agriculture sector to American products. He further claimed that the prime minister personally contacted US President Donald Trump and conveyed readiness to move forward without consulting the union cabinet or key ministers, including those handling agriculture, defence and external affairs.
The Congress leader also alleged that the prime minister assured the United States that India would purchase American goods worth ₹9 lakh crore annually. According to Rahul Gandhi, such a commitment would significantly impact domestic producers, particularly farmers, by increasing imports and intensifying competition in the agricultural market. He argued that farmers’ interests were not adequately safeguarded in the negotiations.
