Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday announced a cash reward of Rs 2 crore for the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team following its maiden Ranji Trophy triumph. The historic victory, achieved against Karnataka on their home ground, has been hailed as a landmark moment for cricket in the Union Territory.
Abdullah described the win as a source of pride and inspiration for the region. In a post on X, he confirmed that the cash reward will be distributed among players and support staff for their “emphatic” performance throughout the five-day final.
The Chief Minister personally traveled to Hubballi on Friday to cheer the team as it built a massive first-innings lead, signaling a near-certain triumph. “I am in Hubballi to cheer the J&K cricket team as they seal a historic win. There hasn’t been a single day in this five-day final when the team has not dominated the opposition,” Abdullah said.

Abdullah also announced that players will be eligible for government appointments under recently notified rules for outstanding sportspersons, recognizing their contribution to Jammu and Kashmir’s sporting achievements.
Accompanying the Chief Minister at the KSCA Cricket Ground were his Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Tanvir Sadiq from Zadibal, and the Administrator of the J&K Cricket Association. They all witnessed the team’s historic victory, marking a defining moment for the territory’s sporting history.
The triumph is seen as a watershed for Jammu and Kashmir cricket, with analysts noting that the team’s rise underscores the growing prominence of cricket talent from the region and could inspire a new generation of athletes.
