Brent Crude Climbs Near $84 As War Hits Hormuz Shipping
Brent crude rises near $84 as conflict disrupts shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Brent crude oil prices climbed close to $84 per barrel as the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran disrupted shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The surge reflects growing fears that energy supplies could be constrained if the war further escalates and tanker traffic remains restricted.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, carrying roughly 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Military tensions, attacks on vessels and rising insurance risks have forced shipping companies to halt or reroute traffic, causing severe congestion and delays in the Persian Gulf.
The disruption has already sent shockwaves through global energy markets. Brent crude has risen about 18% this week, reaching around $84 per barrel, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbed above $78. The rally reflects concerns that oil flows could be severely reduced if the conflict persists or the strait remains partially closed.

Shipping activity through the strait has slowed dramatically, with many tankers anchored nearby and several global shipping companies suspending operations in the area due to security risks. Freight rates for large oil tankers have surged to record levels, and some vessels are being rerouted around Africa, significantly increasing transport costs and delivery times.
Analysts warn that the current price surge may only be the beginning if the crisis deepens. A prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could push oil prices toward $100 per barrel or higher, potentially triggering higher inflation, rising fuel costs and renewed volatility in global financial markets.
The energy shock comes as the Middle East war continues to widen geographically, raising concerns among governments and investors about supply security and the broader economic impact of a prolonged conflict in one of the world’s most important oil-producing regions.
