Mahakali Teaser Out: Akshaye Khanna's Shukracharya Look Draws Praise Online
Akshaye Khanna's Shukracharya transformation in Mahakali teaser wins internet praise.
The teaser of Mahakali, the upcoming film from filmmaker Prasanth Varma, was released on Monday and quickly drew attention online, with Akshaye Khanna’s transformation as Shukracharya emerging as one of the most discussed elements. The actor appears almost unrecognisable in the mythological role, sporting a silver-white beard, thick moustache and an intense expression. Viewers on social media have particularly praised his commanding screen presence and the dramatic transformation.
The teaser draws from the mythological story of Samudra Manthan, depicting the Devas and Asuras coming together to churn the cosmic ocean. While the nectar that emerged from the churning ultimately went to the Devas, the glimpse suggests that the Asuras were left without their share. It also hints at the larger conflict surrounding their claim to Indra’s throne and their eventual banishment to the underworld, setting the stage for the central conflict explored through Shukracharya.
Akshaye Khanna plays Shukracharya, the revered Guru of the Asuras, and his appearance has become a major talking point since the teaser was released. His silver-white facial hair, thick moustache and stern expressions give the character a distinctive appearance, while the actor’s restrained performance adds to the sense of authority surrounding the role. Several viewers said his eyes and screen presence were enough to command attention without relying on an overtly aggressive performance.

Social media reactions largely focused on Khanna’s ability to transform himself for dramatically different roles. One viewer described his Shukracharya as having an intense screen presence, while another praised the actor for moving effortlessly between contrasting characters. Other reactions highlighted the scale of the teaser, its visual presentation and the glimpse of Maa Kali towards the end. The responses indicate that Khanna’s casting and transformation have generated significant curiosity about his role in the film.
Mahakali is the latest instalment in the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe, which began with Hanu-Man. The film is positioned as a female-led superhero project, with Bhoomi Shetty playing the titular character Maha. The supporting cast includes Rohit Saraf, Sriya Reddy, Rakesh Bedi, Samuthirakani, Rajat Kapoor, Murali Sharma and Nassar, adding to the ensemble surrounding the central character.
The film is expected to combine mythology, fantasy and superhero elements as it expands the cinematic universe established by Varma. While the teaser has introduced audiences to its larger world and central conflict, Khanna’s Shukracharya has emerged as one of its biggest talking points. Mahakali is scheduled to release in theatres on January 8, 2027, with the teaser setting up anticipation around the film’s visual scale, mythology-driven storyline and ensemble cast.
