Digvijaya Singh Visits Ram Temple; Political Exchanges Emerge With BJP

Digvijaya Singh visits Ram Temple; BJP sparks political debate.

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh is set to visit the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya on Thursday, marking his first trip to the temple town since the shrine’s foundation stone was laid. According to his schedule, Singh will arrive at Ayodhya airport around 9:40 a.m. and visit key religious sites including Hanumangarhi, the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, and Kanak Bhawan to offer prayers.

The visit has sparked a fresh round of political exchanges between the Congress and the BJP, with leaders from both parties trading sharp remarks over the timing and intent of Singh’s trip. The BJP criticized Singh for not attending the Ram Temple consecration ceremony earlier, despite invitations extended to Congress leaders.

BJP MLA from Bhopal, Rameshwar Sharma, took a pointed jab at Singh, urging him to “pay homage to the martyrs who faced bullets in 1992” and suggesting that the Ram Temple could have been completed earlier had political leadership recognized its significance sooner. Sharma also claimed that Singh’s party once dismissed Lord Ram as a mythical figure, calling on him to acknowledge Ram Lalla as a living reality.

Congress leaders, however, defended Singh’s position. Party spokesperson Jitendra Mishra said Singh’s faith should not be questioned, highlighting his contributions to the temple’s construction, including a 2021 donation of ₹1,11,111 to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Mishra added, “There’s no need to provide proof of Digvijay Singh's adherence to Sanatan traditions. BJP leaders should explain what they have done for the public.”

Hanuman Garhi Temple priest Mahant Raju Das also commented on Singh’s visit, noting the irony of those who once questioned Lord Ram’s existence now offering prayers at the temple. “Who is at the feet of Ramji? Digvijay Singh. Who is taking refuge in Lord Ram? The very people who once called Ram imaginary,” Das told IANS.

Singh’s visit is expected to draw significant attention from both devotees and political observers, highlighting the continued interplay of faith and politics in Ayodhya, a site that remains central to India’s religious and political discourse.
