Renowned Japanese animation director Tsutomu Shibayama, best known for his long association with the iconic anime franchise Doraemon, has died at the age of 84 due to lung cancer. The news of his passing was confirmed by Ajia-do Animation Works, the studio where he previously served as president and CEO.

In an official obituary, the studio stated that Shibayama passed away on March 6, 2026, after battling lung cancer. His death marks the end of a distinguished career spanning several decades in the Japanese animation industry, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping one of the most beloved children’s franchises in the world.

Shibayama directed the Doraemon television anime and helmed its film series for over 20 years, contributing significantly to the franchise’s global popularity. Under his direction, the films maintained a consistent tone and storytelling style that resonated with multiple generations of viewers, helping cement Doraemon’s status as a cultural phenomenon in Japan and abroad.
