Shaun Chen To Quit Canada Parliament Over Health Issues Following 2025 Accident

Shuan Chen, the first Canadian Member of Parliament of both Indian and Chinese heritage, will resign from the House of Commons on August 15 due to health problems stemming from a serious motor vehicle accident last year. Chen represents Scarborough North, a riding in Toronto, and said the injuries from the accident have made it increasingly difficult for him to travel to Ottawa as frequently as his parliamentary responsibilities require. Chen announced his decision on Monday, explaining that he suffered the accident while commuting to Ottawa in late 2025.

He said the incident had resulted in significant health issues and affected his ability to carry out the demands of his role. After discussing the situation with his family, Chen said he concluded that stepping down was the appropriate decision. His resignation will formally end his tenure as the representative for Scarborough North in the House of Commons. “In late fall 2025, I suffered a serious motor vehicle accident, while commuting to Ottawa, which has caused significant health issues that now prevent me from travelling there as frequently as the role requires,” Chen said.

He added that he had discussed the situation with his family before deciding to leave Parliament. His comments indicated that the decision was driven by the continuing impact of the accident rather than a political disagreement or change in his parliamentary priorities. Chen was first elected to Canada’s House of Commons in October 2015 and was subsequently re-elected three times. His political career has therefore spanned more than a decade, during which he represented Scarborough North, an area of Toronto with a diverse population. His departure will create a vacancy in the riding and bring an end to his current parliamentary service following his resignation on August 15.

Chen has also been recognised for his distinctive family and cultural background. In a 2015 interview with Hindustan Times, shortly after entering Parliament, he described himself as being in a “very unique position” because he was born in Canada to a family of Chinese descent with Indian heritage through his parents. His election was significant because it made him the first person with both Indian and Chinese heritage to serve as a Canadian MP. His background has made Chen a notable figure in Canada’s multicultural political landscape. His experience reflects the country’s diverse immigrant communities and the growing representation of Canadians with mixed cultural heritage in public life.

Since his first election in 2015, Chen has served multiple terms representing Scarborough North, maintaining his position through three subsequent re-elections. Chen’s resignation will now shift attention towards the future representation of Scarborough North and the process that will follow his departure. For Chen, the decision marks the conclusion of a long parliamentary career that began in 2015 and included four election victories. While announcing his resignation, he focused on his health and the practical difficulties created by his injuries, saying he had determined after consultation with his family that stepping down was the best course of action. His resignation will take effect on August 15.
