Pooja Bhatt's "Macabre" Family Story Involves A Funeral For a Leg
Pooja Bhatt recalls grandmother's unusual funeral held for her amputated leg.
Actor and filmmaker Pooja Bhatt has recalled an unusual family story involving her maternal grandmother, who once organised a funeral for her own amputated leg and insisted that members of the family attend the ceremony. Speaking during an appearance on Cyrus Broacha’s podcast, Bhatt described the incident as “macabre” while sharing details of the darkly humorous episode from her family’s past.
Bhatt said her maternal grandmother, Betty Bertha Bright, had one of her legs amputated and later decided that the removed limb should receive a proper burial. According to the actor, the family was required to go to St Andrew’s Church for the ceremony, while her grandmother was also present as the amputated leg was being buried. The unusual event became a lasting memory for Bhatt because of both the circumstances and her grandmother’s attitude towards the occasion.
While recounting the story, Bhatt said her grandmother appeared interested in watching how members of the family reacted to the extraordinary situation. The actor described the funeral as an unusual combination of seriousness and dark humour, suggesting that her grandmother approached the loss of her leg in a manner that reflected her distinctive personality. The family, meanwhile, had to participate in a ceremony unlike any conventional funeral.

Bhatt also spoke about her grandmother’s background while sharing the story with Broacha. She identified her maternal grandmother as Betty Bertha Bright, also referring to her as Beatrice Bertha Bright, and said she had Armenian and English or Irish heritage. The recollection offered listeners a glimpse into Bhatt’s family history while also highlighting the unusual stories that have remained part of the family’s memories over the years.
The actor’s account stood out because of the extraordinary idea of holding a burial ceremony for an amputated body part while the person was still alive and present. Bhatt’s description of the episode as “macabre” captured the strange nature of the event, but her retelling also carried a sense of humour. The story quickly attracted attention because of the unusual way her grandmother reportedly dealt with a difficult and deeply personal experience.
Pooja Bhatt, who has worked as an actor, filmmaker and producer, continues to appear in films and streaming projects while also speaking openly about different aspects of her life and career. She was most recently seen in the web series “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” Her latest podcast appearance has now brought renewed attention to a remarkable family story that combined grief, humour and an unconventional farewell arranged by her grandmother herself.
