Papon Urges Support For Assam as Flood Toll Reaches 68

Singer Papon has appealed to people across the country to extend support to flood-affected communities in Assam as the state continues to battle one of its worst monsoon disasters in recent years. In a video shared on social media, the Assamese playback singer thanked volunteers, donors and relief workers who have been assisting people impacted by the floods. He said the collective efforts of individuals and organisations have provided much-needed assistance to families facing severe hardships and urged continued support as relief operations remain underway.

Speaking in the video, Papon described the scale of devastation caused by this year's floods as unprecedented in recent times. He said Assam experiences heavy rainfall and seasonal flooding almost every year, but the current situation has been particularly severe. According to the singer, entire villages remain submerged, thousands of families have been displaced from their homes, many people have lost their lives and large numbers of animals have also perished due to the disaster. He expressed hope that conditions would improve soon and pledged to continue contributing to relief efforts in every possible way.

Papon also acknowledged the work of volunteers who have been supporting his relief initiatives on the ground. He thanked everyone who has donated towards flood relief, saying their contributions have made a meaningful difference to those in need. His appeal comes as several organisations, local communities and government agencies continue distributing food, drinking water, medical supplies and other essential materials to affected residents across the state.

According to PTI, the flood situation in Assam remains serious despite water levels beginning to recede in some regions. The death toll from this year's floods has risen to 68 after two more fatalities were reported. Official figures indicate that more than 5.24 lakh people across five districts continue to be affected by the floods, with authorities focusing on relief distribution, rehabilitation measures and restoring normalcy in the impacted areas.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said electricity supply, which had been suspended in several flood-hit areas as a precautionary safety measure, is now being restored in phases as conditions improve. The state administration has been coordinating with various agencies to ensure essential services are resumed while maintaining safety standards in areas where floodwaters are gradually receding. Relief camps and assistance programmes also remain operational for displaced families.

Papon, one of Assam's most recognised playback singers, is the son of renowned Assamese folk musicians Khagen Mahanta and Archana Mahanta. His appeal has drawn attention to the continuing humanitarian challenges faced by flood-affected communities even as rescue and relief efforts progress. With rehabilitation expected to continue over the coming weeks, authorities and volunteers have urged the public to support ongoing assistance programmes to help affected families recover from the disaster.
