Kyunki 2 Replays Controversial Marital Rape Arc, Echoing 2000s Watershed Moment

Kyunki 2 resurrects marital rape storyline originally tackled 25 years ago.

Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 has reignited discussion around one of the most controversial storylines in Indian television by revisiting the issue of marital rape nearly 25 years after the original series first addressed the subject. The sequel, which premiered in 2025, has drawn attention for depicting a similar narrative involving a new generation of the Virani family. The latest episode centres on Parth, the son of Karan and Nandini, whose abusive behaviour towards his wife Vaishnavi mirrors one of the darkest chapters from the original show, once again placing the long-running family drama at the centre of a social conversation.

In the current storyline, Parth's attempts to sell the family's ancestral property are exposed by Vaishnavi, who informs Tulsi. According to the episode, Parth takes Vaishnavi to Khandala, where he allegedly assaults and intimidates her before attempting to sexually assault her after she refuses to sign property documents. The episode intercuts these scenes with flashbacks from the original series, drawing parallels between the past and present. Tulsi intervenes to rescue Vaishnavi, confronting Parth and striking him with an iron rod while trying to escape. Although Parth initially appears to have died, the episode later reveals that he survives, setting the stage for future developments.

The storyline closely echoes a landmark plot from the original Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, in which Ansh, Tulsi's son, sexually assaulted his wife Nandini after she rejected him and attempted to leave the marriage. At the time, the depiction of marital rape was considered groundbreaking for Indian television, sparking widespread public debate. Tulsi ultimately chose to stand by her daughter-in-law rather than her son, leading to Ansh's death. The storyline also attracted scrutiny from the Women's Commission, while producer Ekta Kapoor defended the show's handling of the issue, saying it was intended to portray the reality faced by survivors rather than sensationalise it.

With the sequel revisiting the same sensitive subject through Parth's character, the series has once again prompted discussions about gender-based violence and accountability within families. The show is expected to take a significant time leap, with Tulsi returning after a decade in prison, leaving viewers uncertain about Parth's fate and whether history will repeat itself. By revisiting one of its most defining storylines, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 continues its tradition of using family drama to explore difficult social issues that remain relevant today.
