Kareena Kapoor Calls Out Bollywood’s Herd Mentality, Citing Animal’s Success And Violence

Kareena Criticises Bollywood’s Copycat Approach to Violence.

Kareena Kapoor has spoken about what she sees as a growing tendency within the Hindi film industry to follow successful trends rather than pursue original ideas. During a recent town hall interaction with Yuvaa, the actor discussed the changing nature of Hindi cinema and the willingness of filmmakers and audiences to explore different kinds of stories. She also criticised what she described as a “herd mentality” in Bollywood, where the success of one film can quickly influence the creative direction of others. Kareena cited Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal as an example of how strongly a successful film can influence the industry.

The Ranbir Kapoor-led film became a major commercial success and generated extensive discussion over its themes, characters and depiction of violence. According to Kareena, its impact also demonstrated how quickly filmmakers can begin looking towards an established formula when a particular style proves successful at the box office. Using a pointed remark, Kareena described the tendency by saying, “Animal chal gayi toh chalo sab violence kar lete hai.” Her comment was aimed at the idea that when a film succeeds with a particular tone or treatment, others may attempt to reproduce those elements rather than develop distinct stories.

She suggested that such imitation can become a problem when commercial success begins to outweigh experimentation and originality in the creative process. The actor's observations come amid a broader discussion about the direction of Hindi cinema. Bollywood has regularly witnessed periods when certain genres, character types or storytelling styles become popular after the success of a prominent film. Filmmakers and studios may then be encouraged to develop projects that resemble proven commercial formulas, particularly in an industry where box-office performance is an important consideration. Kareena's comments highlighted the potential downside of such a trend, particularly when it discourages filmmakers from taking creative risks.

At the same time, Kareena acknowledged that both filmmakers and audiences are increasingly open to different kinds of stories. The willingness to experiment can create opportunities for films that move beyond established conventions and explore new subjects, characters and styles. Her comments therefore reflected a contrast between the growing appetite for varied storytelling and the industry's tendency to quickly reproduce formulas that have already demonstrated commercial success. Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, became an important reference point in this conversation because of the attention surrounding its treatment of violence and masculinity. The film's popularity demonstrated the commercial potential of its distinctive approach, while its content also generated considerable debate.

Kareena's remarks focused less on the film itself and more on what she believes its success could encourage others in the industry to do. Her comments underline a longstanding tension in commercial cinema between creativity and market-driven decision-making. While successful films can influence audience expectations and encourage studios to invest in similar projects, excessive imitation can make films feel repetitive. Kareena's call for greater originality comes at a time when Hindi cinema continues to evolve, with filmmakers experimenting with genres and audiences increasingly exposed to diverse storytelling from across India and around the world.
