Imtiaz Ali's Partition Love Story Defies Weekend Patterns With Strong Monday Collections
Main Vaapas Aaunga collects Rs 8.10 crore with Monday outpacing opening day collections.
Imtiaz Ali’s latest release Main Vaapas Aaunga has shown an unexpected box office trend, registering higher earnings on its first Monday than on its opening day. The film, which features veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah in a key role and stars Diljit Dosanjh, continued its theatrical run with steady audience turnout across India. On Monday alone, the film earned Rs 1.25 crore from 2,139 shows, maintaining momentum despite the typical weekday slowdown at the box office.
According to industry tracking data, the film’s overall India gross collection now stands at Rs 8.10 crore, while its net collection is reported at Rs 6.75 crore. The opening day collection on Friday was Rs 1.15 crore, followed by Rs 1.85 crore on Saturday and a strong Rs 2.50 crore on Sunday. The Monday figure, though lower than Sunday, still marked an unusual rise compared to the film’s debut day performance.
The four-day trajectory suggests a gradual word-of-mouth driven growth pattern rather than a traditional front-loaded weekend surge. The steady increase over Saturday and Sunday indicated improving audience reception, which appears to have contributed to sustained weekday footfalls. Trade observers have noted that such patterns often reflect growing interest driven by audience feedback rather than initial hype alone.

The film has also attracted attention within the industry, with several filmmakers expressing appreciation for its storytelling and execution. Directors Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap and Anubhav Sinha reportedly praised the film, highlighting its emotional depth and cinematic approach. Their reactions have added to the broader discussion around the film’s reception in creative circles.
Main Vaapas Aaunga marks another collaboration between Imtiaz Ali and Diljit Dosanjh following their earlier work on the 2024 project Amar Singh Chamkila. The film also reunites Ali with composer A.R. Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil, continuing a long-standing creative partnership known for its emotionally driven soundtracks and narrative style that blends music with storytelling.
The film’s narrative explores themes of partition, memory and intergenerational conflict, weaving a love story shaped by historical turbulence and emotional upheaval. This thematic depth has been noted as a key element in audience engagement, contributing to the film’s steady performance. As the run continues, industry watchers will be tracking whether the film can maintain its momentum through the weekdays and translate critical appreciation into sustained commercial success.
