Diljit Dosanjh Reveals Strained Ties with Parents After Being Sent Away at 11

Diljit Dosanjh reflects on leaving home at 11 and its impact on his family bonds.

Punjabi Superstar Diljit Dosanjh recently opened up about a deeply personal chapter from his childhood that significantly impacted his relationship with his family. At the tender age of 11, Diljit was sent by his parents to live with his maternal uncle in Ludhiana—a decision taken without involving him or seeking his consent. This pivotal moment, intended to secure better food, shelter, and schooling, created a lasting emotional distance between him and his parents despite his enduring respect and love for them.

In a candid conversation with host Ranveer Allahabadia, Diljit recalled, “I was eleven years old when I left my home and started living with my mamaji (maternal uncle). I came to the city leaving my village behind.” With no mobile phones or television at that time, communication with his parents was sparse and costly, which further deepened the sense of isolation. “I used to stay alone in a small room. I used to just go to school and come back,” he shared, highlighting the lonely and austere conditions of his early life in Ludhiana.

Diljit also expressed admiration for his parents’ intentions despite the strained outcome. He said, “I respect my mother a lot. My father is a very sweet person. He did not ask me anything. He did not even ask which school I studied.” Yet, the lack of engagement led to a break not only with his parents but also affected his ties with the wider family, signaling a formative emotional fracture in his youth.
