Bigg Boss 20’s ‘Weak’ Lineup: Can Salman Khan Bring Back Season 10’s Chaos?

Bigg Boss 20 has entered the season with a lineup that has left some viewers underwhelmed, particularly because of the absence of major television and film stars. The casting has already been described as “weak” by sections of the audience, raising questions about whether Salman Khan’s show can deliver the kind of unpredictable drama associated with its strongest seasons.

However, the lack of obvious star power may not necessarily work against the season. Bigg Boss 10 followed a similar unconventional route by introducing the “Indiawale vs Celebrities” format, bringing commoners into the house alongside established personalities. While that season did not achieve the commercial impact of later editions such as Bigg Boss 11 and Bigg Boss 13, it produced arguments, controversies, friendships and contestants who gained wider recognition during the show.

A relatively lesser-known cast can also reduce the pressure on contestants to protect an already-established public image. Established celebrities often enter reality shows with years of professional reputation, fan expectations and public perception to consider. Contestants still trying to establish themselves may have greater motivation to make an impression, take stronger positions and build their identities through their actions inside the house.

Bigg Boss 10 offered examples of how such personalities could become central to the season. Priyanka Jagga, Swami Om, Manveer Gurjar and Manu Punjabi became widely recognised through their participation, with some of the season’s most controversial moments involving contestants who did not enter with conventional celebrity status. The season demonstrated that Bigg Boss can create personalities rather than simply depend on already-famous participants.

The absence of one dominant superstar could also make the house dynamics less predictable. Established celebrities can sometimes influence the hierarchy among contestants because of their popularity and professional standing. With a more evenly matched lineup, alliances could instead develop around friendships, strategy, tasks and individual personalities. It could also give Salman Khan more scope to respond to contestants based primarily on what they do inside the house, rather than their status outside it.

The challenge, however, will fall heavily on the contestants and production team. A lesser-known cast cannot depend on existing rivalries, fan wars or celebrity histories to generate interest. Every task, nomination, disagreement, friendship and alliance will carry greater importance. If the contestants manage to create compelling narratives and connect with viewers, Bigg Boss 20 could turn its perceived casting weakness into an advantage and potentially create a new group of reality-TV personalities.
