Bengali Actor Rahul Banerjee Dies in Tragic Drowning Accident

Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee passed away on March 29 following an accidental drowning at Talsari Beach, near the Odisha-West Bengal border. The actor, aged in his 30s, died while undergoing treatment at Digha Hospital. Authorities have registered the incident as an unnatural death case.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on Monday at Tamluk Hospital to determine the exact circumstances of his death. Preliminary findings indicate that Rahul drowned after remaining submerged for a prolonged period. The autopsy revealed that a significant amount of sand and water had entered his lungs, causing them to swell to nearly twice their normal size. Additionally, sand and saline water were found in his oesophagus. Officials have stated that a viscera examination will be carried out to ascertain further details, including whether alcohol played any role in the incident.
Following the completion of the post-mortem, Rahul Banerjee’s body was transported to his residence in Bijoygarh, South Kolkata. Family members, friends, and fans gathered to pay their final respects ahead of his last rites, which are scheduled to take place at the Keoratala Crematorium.

Rahul’s wife, actress Priyanka Sarkar, shared a statement on Instagram expressing her grief. She wrote, “This is a time of immense grief and deep despair for us. In this difficult moment, we sincerely request space and privacy. There is a child, a mother, a family, and loved ones trying to navigate this loss together.” She urged media and well-wishers to respect their privacy during this period of mourning.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed sorrow over the actor’s sudden demise. “I am shocked, deeply saddened to hear the news that the distinguished, young, and popular actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee is suddenly no longer among us. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family, loved ones, and countless admirers,” she said, describing his death as “an irreparable loss to the Bengali entertainment industry.”
Rahul Banerjee was a well-known figure in Bengali Cinema and Television. He gained recognition with the 2008 film Chirodini Tumi Je Amar and went on to feature in films including Tumi Asbe Bole (2014), Zulfiqar (2016), Byomkesh Gotro (2018), Biday Byomkesh (2018), and The Academy of Fine Arts (2025). His sudden passing has left the Bengali entertainment community and fans in shock.
