AR Rahman: "When You Explain, They Won't Listen" After Communal Row

AR Rahman moves on from communal Hindi film industry remark controversy, saying explanations fall on deaf ears.

Oscar-winning Composer AR Rahman has once again spoken about the controversy triggered by his earlier remarks on the Hindi film industry, signalling that he has put the episode behind him. Speaking on the YouTube podcast Noise and Grains, Rahman addressed questions about the clarification video he released after facing online criticism. He appeared calm and cautious, stressing the importance of preparedness in life rather than revisiting the issue in detail.

During the conversation, Rahman expressed reluctance to dwell on the controversy, suggesting it was better to move on. He remarked that people who truly know an individual do not require explanations, while those who have already made up their minds are unlikely to listen. His comments were delivered with a light tone, indicating a desire to close the chapter on the matter.

The controversy began after Rahman, in a recent interview, suggested that work opportunities in the Hindi film industry had slowed for him due to shifting power dynamics and possibly a “communal” factor. He clarified that these perceptions often reached him indirectly, describing them as “Chinese whispers.” Rahman noted that decisions were increasingly being made by non-creative stakeholders, sometimes affecting artistic collaborations.

Several prominent voices from the film industry responded to Rahman’s remarks. Writer Shobhaa De described the comments as concerning, stating that Bollywood has historically remained free of communal bias and driven largely by talent. Singers Shaan and lyricist Javed Akhtar also dismissed the idea of a communal angle, emphasising that professional opportunities in music depend on creative choices rather than religious identity.

Following sustained criticism, Rahman released a video message on social media to clarify his intent. He reiterated that India remains central to his identity and creative journey and that he never intended to hurt sentiments. Highlighting his recent projects and collaborations, Rahman said his purpose has always been to honour culture through music and celebrate diversity.

On the professional front, Rahman remains focused on his work and upcoming performances. He is currently preparing for the Chennai leg of his Wonderment Tour, scheduled around Valentine’s Day. The composer continues to enjoy a strong global following, reaffirming his enduring influence in the world of music.
