Vignesh Shivan Reacts To LIK Result, Says He Felt Sad About Box Office Outcome

Vignesh Shivan admits disappointment after LIK underperformed at box office.

Filmmaker Vignesh Shivan has opened up about the underwhelming box office performance of his latest film Love Insurance Kompany, admitting that the result left him disappointed despite his emotional attachment to the project. The film, starring Pradeep Ranganathan, was released in theatres on April 10 and recently began streaming on Amazon Prime Video on May 6.

The film received mixed reviews upon release and reportedly earned less than ₹70 crore at the box office, ending Pradeep Ranganathan’s streak of successful films crossing the ₹100 crore mark. His earlier projects, including Love Today, Dragon and Dude, had all performed strongly commercially, making expectations surrounding LIK considerably high.

In a lengthy Instagram note, Vignesh Shivan reflected on the ambition behind the project, describing it as a film built on big dreams rather than a “safe” attempt. He said he had imagined the film resonating with audiences on a massive scale and expected it to surpass even the ₹100 crore benchmark. The director wrote that while he visualised applause and audience laughter in theatres, the film ultimately did not connect in the way he had hoped.

The director acknowledged that the final outcome was emotionally difficult to process, but added that he still viewed the film’s release itself as a personal achievement. He noted that he had expected appreciation from filmmakers and personalities he admired, but reality unfolded differently after the film’s theatrical run.

Despite the commercial setback, Vignesh maintained a positive outlook, saying he remained content with having completed and released the project. Actress Nayanthara, who has consistently supported the filmmaker publicly, also showed encouragement following the OTT release of the film.

The discussion around LIK’s performance comes at a time when expectations for Tamil commercial cinema remain high, especially for films backed by successful actors and established filmmakers. The film’s arrival on streaming platforms is now expected to give it a second opportunity to connect with audiences beyond its theatrical run.
