Tamil Film 'Thaai Kizhavi' Collects Around ₹44 Lakhs On Monday, Total Hits ₹14.24 Cr

Rural comedy Thaai Kizhavi posts ₹14 cr+ total after steady weekend, sees typical Monday slowdown.

Radikaa Sarathkumar's Tamil comedy-drama Thaai Kizhavi experienced a sharp decline in collections on its first Monday (Day 4), slowing down after a robust opening weekend that provided a much-needed boost to Kollywood's box office in early 2026. The film, which hit theatres on February 27, 2026, opened moderately on Friday with an estimated ₹2.65 crore net in India, according to tracking platform Sacnilk.

It then surged significantly over the weekend, benefiting from positive word-of-mouth, family audiences, and strong occupancy in Tamil Nadu. Saturday (Day 2) saw collections rise to around ₹5 crore, followed by a further increase on Sunday (Day 3) to approximately ₹6-6.15 crore. This pushed the cumulative India net total to about ₹13.65-14.01 crore by the end of the weekend, marking a solid performance for a female-led rural drama produced by Sivakarthikeyan.

On Day 4 (Monday, March 2, 2026), early estimates from Sacnilk indicate a steep drop to roughly ₹0.21 crore (21 lakhs) net, typical for weekdays following a strong weekend in regional cinema. The film's total India net collection now stands at approximately ₹14.01 crore, inching closer to the ₹15 crore milestone. The drop reflects the usual post-weekend slowdown, particularly on a working day, though the overall trajectory remains encouraging compared to recent Tamil releases.

Directed by Sivakumar Murugesan, Thaai Kizhavi centers on a powerful 70-year-old village matriarch who doubles as a moneylender, delivering a blend of humor, emotion, and family dynamics that has resonated with audiences. Radikaa Sarathkumar's central performance, supported by a ensemble cast including Singam Puli, Munishkanth, and others, has drawn praise for its authenticity and relatability. The film's success in pulling crowds from B and C centers, combined with Sivakarthikeyan's production backing and promotional efforts, has helped it stand out in a relatively quiet early-year market.

As Thaai Kizhavi continues its theatrical run, trade observers note its potential to sustain momentum through positive reviews and organic growth. The movie's healthy weekend has provided relief to exhibitors amid broader industry challenges, with expectations that it could approach or cross ₹20 crore domestically in the coming weeks if weekday holds remain decent. With digital rights reportedly secured by JioHotstar for a late March premiere, the film is poised to reach wider audiences soon after its cinema phase.
