Rajinikanth’s Coolie Hits ₹222.5 Cr but Faces Early Drop
Coolie earns ₹222.5 crore in 7 days but box office momentum dips amid mixed reviews.
Rajinikanth’s 171st film, Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has amassed Rs 222.5 crore at the domestic box office across all languages in its first seven days since its release on August 14, 2025, according to trade reports. The action-packed film, produced by Sun Pictures, opened with a staggering Rs 65 crore, including Rs 44.5 crore from Tamil markets alone, making it Rajinikanth’s highest-ever opener, though it fell short of Vijay’s Leo (Rs 66 crore) for Tamil cinema’s top opening day.
However, the film’s earnings saw a significant dip by day seven, collecting Rs 6.5 crore on August 20, down from Rs 9.5 crore the previous day, reflecting a decline in momentum.
Despite its star-studded cast, including Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and a cameo by Aamir Khan, Coolie has received mixed reviews, which may have impacted its word-of-mouth and weekend performance. The film earned Rs 39.5 crore on Saturday, a drop from its second-day collection of Rs 54.75 crore.
NDTV critic Saibal Chatterjee gave Coolie 3 out of 5 stars, noting, “It is Rajinikanth the star and Deva the character who call the shots,” but highlighted the secondary roles of other characters, including Shruti Haasan’s Preethi. The Tamil and Hindi markets have shown particular weakness, with Hindi collections underperforming in week one.
Facing competition from War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, Coolie has struggled to maintain its initial box office dominance. Both films, released around Independence Day, have yet to deliver the expected blockbuster numbers after a week.
As Coolie navigates its second week, its ability to rebound will depend on audience reception and sustained interest in Rajinikanth’s star power. The film’s high-energy narrative and Kanagaraj’s direction continue to draw fans, but the declining collections underscore the challenges of sustaining buzz in a competitive market.
