Rajinikanth Explains Why He Agreed to 'Jailer 2' After Rejecting 'Baasha 2' and 'Petta 2'

Film releases in theatres on October 15, produced by Sun Pictures.

Rajinikanth has explained why he agreed to return for Jailer 2, despite generally avoiding sequels to his successful films. Speaking at the sequel’s pre-release event, the actor said the decision was driven by the original film’s storyline and the unresolved conflicts surrounding his character, Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Unlike sequel proposals for Baasha 2 and Petta 2, which he had previously turned down, Jailer offered a story that he believed naturally called for another chapter. The 2023 action film had introduced powerful criminal networks and left several questions unanswered, giving director Nelson Dilipkumar a foundation to develop the story further.

Rajinikanth said he was usually reluctant to work on sequels because they often repeat the original film’s central idea with a few additional elements. He recalled that he had not been convinced by the proposals for Baasha 2 and Petta 2, including the suggestion from director Karthik Subbaraj to expand Vijay Sethupathi’s character in Petta. However, his view changed after he watched Jailer again following its release on an over-the-top streaming platform. Revisiting the film helped him recognise how its ending had established a clear direction for a continuation, rather than leaving the possibility of a sequel dependent only on the original film’s commercial success.

The actor particularly highlighted the closing portion involving Varma, a character whose final warning suggests that a much larger criminal network remains active. According to Rajinikanth, Varma indicates that powerful people are backing him and that they would not leave the Jailer alone. This revelation, he said, made the story suitable for a second instalment. Nelson had also introduced details about Varma’s international business connections and the influence he commanded, creating a broader conflict that could extend beyond the events of the first film. These elements convinced Rajinikanth that the narrative still had significant scope for development.

Another important factor was the Jailer’s possession of three containers reportedly worth thousands of crores, which could give the criminal network a strong reason to pursue him. Rajinikanth also referred to influential criminals and dons associated with Nagpur jail, suggesting that the protagonist would face formidable opposition. He said these details made the sequel’s premise feel like a natural progression of the original story. After recognising the potential in the setup, Rajinikanth decided to contact Nelson, indicating that the strength of the narrative, rather than simply the popularity of the first film, ultimately persuaded him to return.

Written and directed by Nelson, Jailer 2 is produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner and is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 15. Rajinikanth reprises his role as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, with Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik among the returning cast members. The sequel also introduces several new performers, including SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff are also expected to return in cameo appearances, bringing together established and new characters for the next chapter.

The film’s trailer has generated further discussion among fans, particularly over the possibility of a surprise appearance by Hrithik Roshan. The makers reportedly teased a mystery cameo through a silhouette, prompting speculation about the actor’s involvement, but no official confirmation has been provided. With the release approaching, attention is focused on how Nelson will develop the criminal network introduced in the first film and raise the stakes for Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Rajinikanth’s explanation suggests that the sequel is intended to continue an unfinished conflict, with the original film’s unanswered questions serving as the central reason for bringing the character back to the screen.
