Rahul Bhatt Opens Up About ‘Fractured’ Relationship With Father Mahesh Bhatt
Rahul Bhatt discusses his strained relationship and communication gap.
Rahul Bhatt, son of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and his first wife Kiran, has spoken about his relationship with his father, describing it as “fractured” and saying he often felt that he had to navigate his childhood without the parental presence he expected. In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Rahul reflected on the communication gap between them and said he believed his father had been somewhat indifferent towards him. Despite the strain in their relationship, Rahul said he continues to love and respect Mahesh and acknowledged the support his father has provided to the family.
Speaking about his childhood and his relationship with Mahesh, Rahul said, “I had to be my own father.” He explained that although his father was physically present in his life, he did not always feel emotionally connected to him. Rahul said Mahesh had been “a little indifferent” towards him for reasons that he believed his father understood best. He also described their relationship as fractured and said communication had remained a problem between them over the years. Rahul’s comments focused on his personal experience rather than placing a broader judgment on his father.
Mahesh Bhatt and Kiran separated in the late 1970s, while their formal divorce was finalised in 1988. Mahesh later married actor Soni Razdan in 1986, and the couple have two daughters, actors Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt. Rahul also spoke about his relationship with Soni, describing her as a “great” and “warm” person. However, he said he felt that their relationship had largely remained formal, despite the family connection and occasional communication.

Rahul also acknowledged that Mahesh has continued to support Kiran despite the difficulties in their relationship. Recalling his mother’s struggles, Rahul said there had been a period marked by negativity and a lack of communication within the family. He said his father continued to take care of Kiran and provided financial assistance whenever the family faced difficulties. According to Rahul, Mahesh continues to pay household expenses, something he said he respects even though their personal relationship remains complicated.
While describing the emotional distance between himself and his father, Rahul did not portray Mahesh solely in negative terms. He said he respects his father and recognised the practical support he has continued to provide to his mother. Rahul also said that he is financially self-sufficient and earns a comfortable living, making it clear that his comments about their relationship were not centred on financial dependence. Instead, he focused on the communication difficulties and emotional distance he experienced while growing up.
Rahul’s comments offer a personal account of a complicated family relationship that has evolved over several decades. He said that while he continues to respect and love Mahesh, the lack of communication has contributed to the distance between them. His remarks also highlighted his appreciation for the support his father continues to provide to Kiran. Rahul’s description of their relationship reflects the distinction he makes between respecting his father and addressing the emotional difficulties he experienced within their family.
