Priyanka Chopra Excited To Return To Indian Cinema With SS Rajamouli’s ‘Varanasi’
Priyanka Chopra returns to Indian films with SS Rajamouli’s ‘Varanasi’, starring Mahesh Babu.
Actress Priyanka Chopra on Friday confirmed her return to Indian cinema with the upcoming film “Varanasi,” during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” The film, directed by acclaimed filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, stars Mahesh Babu in the lead role and will mark Priyanka’s first Indian project in nearly seven years.
Speaking to Fallon, Priyanka expressed her excitement about joining the pan-Indian venture, praising Rajamouli as “one of India’s most amazing and talented directors.” She shared that the film has been shot in IMAX format and that production has spanned 14 months. “It’s gonna be an adventure, I am very excited about it,” she said, highlighting the scale and ambition of the project.
“Varanasi” was announced last year by Rajamouli, who also introduced Mahesh Babu’s character Rudhra, depicted in a striking first-look image riding an ox and holding a trishul. Priyanka will portray Mandakini, and the film is scheduled for release in April 2027, generating anticipation among fans of Indian cinema and pan-Indian projects.

Priyanka’s confirmation of the project comes after her recent appearance in the action thriller “The Bluff,” directed by Frank E. Flowers. The movie, set in the Cayman Islands, features high-octane sequences with Priyanka performing intense sword and gun action alongside Karl Urban. “The Bluff” was released on Prime Video on February 25.
Fans and industry observers have welcomed Priyanka’s return to Indian films, noting her international profile and experience in Hollywood projects as a boost to the visibility of “Varanasi.” The collaboration with Rajamouli, whose previous blockbuster “RRR” gained global acclaim, further adds to expectations for a high-impact cinematic release.
With production ongoing and a scheduled release next year, “Varanasi” represents a significant milestone in Priyanka’s career, marking her re-entry into Indian cinema while blending large-scale visual storytelling with a pan-Indian narrative approach.
