One person died after electrocution incident on Jailer 2 film set in Chennai.
A 28-year-old worker died after being electrocuted on the set of the upcoming film Jailer 2, starring Rajinikanth, at a private film studio in Panaiyur on Thursday, in an incident that has triggered an investigation into on-set safety protocols. The deceased has been identified as Karthikeyan, who was reportedly engaged in art direction work when the accident occurred. According to police, he was involved in constructing a house-like set for the film’s shoot when he came into contact with an electric current. The sudden shock proved fatal, and he was declared dead following the incident.
Authorities said the body was sent for post-mortem examination as part of standard procedure.Preliminary findings suggest that the electrocution may have been caused by a possible electrical leak or fault in wiring at the set construction site. Police from the Kanathur jurisdiction confirmed that an FIR is yet to be registered, but a detailed inquiry has been initiated to determine how the mishap occurred and whether safety protocols were followed during the installation of electrical equipment on the set.
The incident took place at a private studio facility in Panaiyur, where large-scale set construction work was underway for Jailer 2, one of the most anticipated Tamil film productions currently in progress. The production is being mounted on a significant scale, with extensive set design and technical arrangements being carried out ahead of filming schedules.Jailer 2 is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures. It marks the second collaboration between the director and Rajinikanth following the massive success of their 2023 film Jailer, which went on to become one of the highest-grossing Tamil films in Indian cinema history.

The original Jailer featured Rajinikanth in the role of a former prison warden on a mission of revenge after his son is presumed dead. The film also included performances by Vinayakan, Ramya Krishnan, Vasanth Ravi, and Yogi Babu, along with cameo appearances by prominent actors such as Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, and Jackie Shroff. Its commercial success significantly raised expectations for the sequel.Industry sources note that Jailer 2 is scheduled for release in June this year, with production activities progressing at multiple locations.
However, the incident has now cast a shadow over the shoot, prompting renewed scrutiny of safety standards in the Tamil film industry, particularly on large outdoor sets involving heavy electrical and construction work.Film production sets typically involve complex temporary electrical installations to support lighting, construction tools, and filming equipment. Experts say that inadequate insulation, faulty grounding, or poor supervision during setup can significantly increase the risk of accidents. In this case, investigators are expected to examine whether certified electricians were present and whether proper safety checks were conducted before work began.
Authorities have also indicated that statements from crew members and technical staff will be recorded as part of the investigation. Depending on the findings, responsibility may be fixed on contractors or subcontractors involved in set construction and electrical setup. The tragedy has sparked concern within the film fraternity, with calls for stricter enforcement of workplace safety regulations in the entertainment industry. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
