No Sunday Rescue: Opening Weekend Stagnation Spells Trouble For Jason Sanjay’s First Film

Jason Sanjay's debut film stagnates commercially.

Sigma, the action-crime thriller marking Jason Sanjay's directorial debut, has struggled to gain momentum at the box office during its opening weekend. The film, which stars Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah in the lead roles, was released in theatres on October 2 but witnessed a subdued response over its first three days. The film has collected Rs 5.35 crore nett in India, while its India gross collection stands at Rs 6.10 crore, according to the figures cited by Sacnilk. The film earned Rs 1.50 crore nett on its first Sunday, failing to register a significant improvement over its Saturday performance. Sunday is traditionally an important day for theatrical releases because of higher audience availability, but Sigma could not translate the weekend into a substantial increase in collections.

The Day 3 performance kept the film's overall opening weekend numbers relatively modest and indicated that the action-crime thriller was facing challenges in attracting larger audiences during its initial run. Sigma opened with Rs 2.35 crore nett in India on Friday. The film recorded 31.1 per cent overall occupancy across 1,813 shows on its opening day, giving it the highest single-day collection of its first three days. However, the film's earnings declined on Saturday, when it collected Rs 1.50 crore nett. The second day saw overall occupancy fall to 22.6 per cent across 1,802 shows, suggesting that the film was unable to sustain the momentum generated by its opening-day performance.

The film's Sunday figures showed a similar pattern. Sigma recorded 23.6 per cent overall occupancy across 1,753 shows on Day 3. According to the reported data, the film registered 149,651 footfalls on Sunday, taking its cumulative footfall count to 515,512 after three days. While the Sunday occupancy was slightly higher than Saturday's figure, the increase did not translate into a rise in the film's daily nett collection, which remained at Rs 1.50 crore. The performance comes at an important point for Jason Sanjay, who has made his directorial debut with the project. The filmmaker is the son of actor Vijay, making Sigma a closely watched release within the Tamil film industry.

However, the early box office numbers have not reflected a major theatrical breakthrough for the film. With Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah leading the cast, the film entered theatres with expectations surrounding both its action-crime storyline and the debut of its director. Across its opening three days, Sigma has accumulated Rs 5.35 crore nett in India. Its daily collections stood at Rs 2.35 crore on Friday, followed by Rs 1.50 crore each on Saturday and Sunday. The India gross collection has reached Rs 6.10 crore, while the reported total footfall count stands at 515,512.

The occupancy figures also show a decline from the opening day's 31.1 per cent to 22.6 per cent on Saturday before a marginal recovery to 23.6 per cent on Sunday. The film's performance in the coming days will determine whether it can recover some momentum after its slow opening weekend. With the initial three-day collection remaining at Rs 5.35 crore nett, Sigma will need stronger weekday numbers to build a more substantial theatrical total. For now, the film's opening weekend has remained below the level that would indicate a strong box office run, with its Sunday collection offering no significant jump despite the weekend advantage.
