Newark’s Runway 29 Under Scrutiny After Jet Clips Truck During Low Approach

Viral video shows Boeing 767 hitting truck in US

A bakery delivery truck driver narrowly escaped death after a United Airlines Boeing 767 struck his vehicle while descending toward Newark Liberty International Airport, in an unusual incident that has since gone viral online, according to reports. The driver, identified as Warren Boardley Jr., was travelling along the New Jersey Turnpike when the aircraft allegedly came in at a very low altitude during its landing approach. The collision occurred as the jet was preparing to land, with one of its landing gear tyres reportedly making contact with the truck’s windshield and cab area.

The impact shattered the truck’s glass, sending debris into the vehicle and injuring Boardley Jr. on his arm and hand. Despite the severity of the collision, he managed to survive and later contacted his father shortly after the incident. The driver has since been recovering at home and is not expected to return to his profession, according to family members. His father, Warren Boardley Sr., a noted figure in Baltimore’s boxing community and a Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, described receiving the call from his son in a state of shock. He said the family struggled to comprehend how a commercial aircraft could strike a vehicle on a highway, calling the incident “unthinkable” and expressing relief that his son survived.

Boardley Sr. also stated that his son sustained injuries beyond the visible cuts, including pain across his body and possible internal injuries. While he expressed hope that physical recovery would continue, he noted that the psychological impact of the accident would likely take longer to heal. The unusual nature of the incident has prompted an official investigation. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it will examine flight operations, weather conditions, human performance, crew coordination, and air traffic control procedures to determine how the aircraft came into such close proximity with highway traffic during its landing approach.

United Airlines confirmed that the Boeing 767 landed safely at Newark Liberty International Airport and stated that no passengers or crew members were injured during the flight. The airline has not provided further details pending the outcome of the investigation. The incident has drawn widespread attention due to its rare and unexpected nature, raising questions about airspace clearance procedures near busy transport corridors like the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs close to major airport flight paths.
