Months after split from AR Rahman, Saira Undergoes Surgery

Saira Rahman's lawyer issued a statement on her recent medical emergency and surgery

Oscar and Grammy-winning Indian music composer AR Rahman’s former wife, Saira Rahman, is recovering from a surgery necessitated by a medical emergency, according to a statement issued by her lawyer, Vandana Shah.

In the statement, Saira expressed her gratitude to her well-wishers, including AR Rahman, sound designer Resul Pookutty, his wife Shadia, and Shah, for their support during this challenging time. She also requested privacy as she focuses on her recovery.

“A few days ago, Mrs. Saira Rahman was hospitalized due to a medical emergency and underwent surgery. During this challenging time, her sole focus is on a speedy recovery,” the statement read. “She deeply appreciates the concern and support from those around her and requests prayers for her well-being from her numerous well-wishers and supporters… She is truly grateful for their kindness and encouragement.”

Saira’s hospitalisation comes months after she and AR Rahman announced their separation in November 2023, ending 29 years of marriage. The couple had tied the knot in 1995 through an arranged marriage and share three children—daughters Khatija and Raheema, and son Ameen.

Following the news, AR Ameen, their son and a singer, took to Instagram Stories, requesting people to respect the family’s privacy during this period.

Saira’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, had also released an official statement when the couple announced their separation, asking for understanding from the public.

As Saira focuses on her recovery, she continues to receive support from her close family and friends. Her well-wishers remain hopeful for her speedy healing and respect her request for privacy.
